Treadmills are nice if you live in Wisconsin or some such place. Couple of problems though, treadmills are generally considered high-impact, like running. If running's what you want, IMHO, they're a poor substitute. First of all, treadmills are boring, you don't get much variation in terrain, you're breathing stale indoor air, yadda yadda yadda. Second, if you're training to run on asphalt, a la marathoning, etc., treadmills will not train your body enough to avoid **** splints, IMHO. I learned this the painful way. In preparing for the Academy, I was running about 20 miles a week on a treadmill, but at the Academy, we ran almost exclusively on asphalt and I got shin splints as bad or worse than cadets who hadn't been running at all.

Or you could even try a rowing machine. For cardio i personally love using my rowing machine. Running is just too high-impact for me. Rowing machines are easy on your joints and work out multiple areas of your body.
The rowing machine i use is the "concept II". Little pricy at $800, but it's a great machine and it allows you to modify your workouts to whatever specifications you want. You can set it up for distance training, for time, and even interval training. It also comes apart in 2 pieces and it can stand up for easy storage.
I've also used treadmills before and i find rowing machines are just more enjoyable to use as well. -
