No one actually believes freedom of speech exists do they?

It exists only in a carefully defined set of boundaries.

Bill Hicks: 'We are free to do as they tell us'.

(not that that means anything, just seemed appropriate)

Regarding civil lawsuits, it comes back to practicality. Their suit might not stand up in court and you will probably win, but you won't get back court costs... unless you file suit against them. That's more court costs and there is no guarantee of success. From a pragmatic point of view, it might be easier to settle with something such as a retraction. In fact, I'm sure that the claimant(s) were probably advised to avoid actually going to court. It's unfortunate that Michael was on the recieving end of such a suit, but it remains that he has merely retracted his statements as part of a mutual settlement.

Freedom of speech is a right granted by our society and protected by those citizens willing to fight for them. However, you need to be aware that someone can challenge you in a civil court, no matter how truthful you are or what your rights are. That is THEIR right.

Well didn't somebody post something about an actual case where somebody was sued on an internet sight? Well there you go. Freedom of Speech as long as you can afford it.

MICHEAL sorry about the legal stuff. I do not know any details but, this for the other posts here. You have freedom to speak, that guy has the freedom to react. The reputation of his school is the only way he will stay open. Freedom comes with a price, that price is that not every one thinks like you , so they have the right to confront you and your actions.

Of course this hurts, after all it is not basket weaving.

Once again, this is a slightly more complicated then you all think.
