I think this mcdojo phenomenon has more to do with the innate laziness of people than any specific movies. If your goal is to gain a black belt in martial arts, and you can do so by either experiencing discomfort at Cobra Kai or training comfortably with Mr Miyagi, 9/10 people are going to follow the path of Daniel-San. The bulk of karate dojos are merely catering for the public demand. Whether or not they are useless and ripping off their students is a matter of perspective - are we comparing to a proper martial artist or a Joe Normal?

Great read. I now have a new found hate for The Karate Kid.

What's funny is that although Mr. Miyagi continued to tell Daniel that karate was only for self defense, he basically trained him for a karate point-tournament.

Yeah, I always thought it was weird that the tournament rules forbade taking somebody down with a sweep (boo! hiss! jonny is a brute! ... they fought on mats didn't they ?) , but Daniel-san was heroic when he kicked Johnny in the face as hard as he could...

Hands up who would have rather trained at the Cobra-kai full-contact place under the big 'nam veteran than with Miyagi and his 'learn karate by fixing up my house' schtick ?

I'd join the local boxing club instead. I don't particularly like my instructor being a psycho and yelling at me all the time.
