I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'll put in my two cents re: Judo vs BJJ.
The philosophy is different. Judo is about sport. While some BJJ schools are sport oriented, the training, the rules of competition and the emphasis is still about fighting.
The goals are different because of this difference of emphasis. Even in newaza. In Judo schools the goal is the pin, with submission very far behind simply because it's safer to pin the guy. So the positional emphasis in Judo is on kesa gatame. In BJJ the positional emphasis is on mount or back mount because this is the best place to be in a fight, and this is reflected in the BJJ point system.
By paying half the price in a Judo school, you are not going to be learning to fight the same way as a BJJ school. How often in a Judo school do you hear "Keep your head in close to avoid his punches"? How often in Judo schools are you taught to slip punches and clinch? How often in Judo schools are you taught to mount, bitch slap your opponent until he raises his arms to defend himself and then armbar him? Or wait until he rolls over to back choke him?

Both styles may have similar techniques, but the philosophy behind those styles is really what makes them different.

That may be true now, but that's not what Jigoro Kano had in mind when he created Judo, he wanted a new art that you can practice without injury.

Though, my Judo class teaches us fighting AND trains us for tournaments, everything you just said, my school has. Since we have JJ guys up there as well we learn about punching, kicking, eye gouging, and when we spar them they'll be able to hit, kick, and imitate gouging and clawing. My sensei always advises us to use WHATEVER we can in a street fight, we've gone through punches to a throw, punches from a mount, throws to punches, etc. So if you think I'm going to turtle up on the ground, or put the guy in a pin, you're damn wrong.

My comments were based on the fact that there have been several threads stating not to pm phrost with this sort of crap. That this sort of thing is the job of other admins. Deadpan Scientist is also probably most capable, on the staff, to check your claims.

With so many possible logical fallacies to address, I've been ignoring one I find particular intereting to address the more pressing ones.

In this lull, I'd like to bring it up. Forseti says (to paraphrase) that BJJ is a fad because:

A newcomer will move away from BJJ when they learn it is just judo.

versus

Professional MMA/NHB fighters are moving away from BJJ.

Yeah, I tried to point that out a few times too. I figured there was a more fun battle to fight.

Up to probably about 150 posts ago I was trying to get him to cite any examples of the nhb crowd moving away from bjj. My evidenced was centered on Jackson's team and Couture and Liddel having a bjj teaching groundfighting on TUF.

I figured it was easier to simply point out his central idea and its flaw (no support).

What I find hilarious is how in the next TUF, Marc Laimon could say on national television "BJJ was originally Kosen judo" and no one would care, except some bitter judoka.
