How do you learn BJJ?

I train 2-3 times per week with a brown belt. He teaches all the classes, and for belt tests we go out to the main academy a few miles down the road so Pedro Sauer can evaluate us.

i've been training with a bjj purple for about a year, but he just got his brown from caique.

Train with Christian Montes who's a purple belt.

Been with him, off and on due to injuries, twice a week for almost 2 years now at the SBGi in New York. The training isn't just BJJ as we cover standup and clinch too.

Been to 2 Matt Thornton seminars and 1 Eddie Martinez seminar and I own serveral books and instructional DVD's to compliment my training.

As you train at SBG, I think I know what you mean by this statement - but to be truthful, BJJ DOES have standup and clinch, too..

otherwise..

it's like what? you both lie down - and roly-poly toward each other till you are grappling?
or does it start in the missionary position.. after a little foreplay?

As for Aesopian's question to drummerboy, to answer for myself - I don't need to go far at all.. The local University Dojo has both BJJ and Judo clubs, I don't really train UNDER any BJJ instructor, or train during BJJ class time.

ie: I receive no actual instruction, other than being schooled in 101 ways.

All I do is roll with the guys on a Sunday afternoon. Among them are David Rawlinson (Blue Belt) and Billy Burton (Purple Belt).

David and Billy both learned under Jeremy T'akody *(Jeremy Chic) who learned from John Will - JohnnyS' instructor and a black belt under Rigan Machado.

I voted other just because it hasn't been six months yet. Actually, I'm probably getting close but not yet.
School owner and main instructor in all of the arts taught at my school is only a purple belt.
However, one of his old students, that passed him up (in BJJ) years ago, is in charge of the evening classes and he is a Black Belt. So...
about 95% of my evening classes are with a BJJ Black Belt (actually earned in Brazil.)
The rest of them and any day classes (on those rare occasions when I can escape work) are all taught by the Purple Belt.
