Good point about the military having some poor quality people.

Who do you think joins the service more often than not:

1. people who have a ton of options and have their lives together or,

2. People who are looking for a way out of the shitmess their lives have become?

I know there are alot of very GOOD people in the military as well but its used as a free education or a way to stay out of jail also.

You ever run a business Wastrel? Would you go to the POOREST section of your town and just start hiring? You'd be a fool if you did because people with bad economic situations tend to be less educated and come froma place where crime is usually much higher than places of higher economic brackets.

When a poor person joins the army because he and his family are scared he'll be in jail otherwise your not exactly getting the cream of the crop.

Depends on the nature of the business PD. There are many smart and hungry (not in the culinary sense) people in poor areas.

You may have a hard time understanding the sense of duty that many in America feel, and are willing to pursue at risk of their lives.

I also reject the notion that poor quality people come from poor areas. They, in general, may not be the best group to recruit for country club staff...but they sure as hell can make great warriors.

in recent years the US military have had the highest number of HS and college graduates ever in its entire history ... its doctrine, training and effectiveness are second to none ... it sees real live action at least several times every decade ... its soldiers are in general well motivated, well trained, and decent human beings (with some very public exceptions) ...

there is no other large military in the history of humanity that is as professional as the modern day western soldier (US, UK, Canada, Japan, France, etc ...)

any failings tend to be political failings ...
