    Greetings. Flexibility

    Greetings.

I'm pretty flexible already. I want to be more flexible.

I want to be able to do a split in all directions. What is the best way to get there? Should I just try to do splits, or use other localized stretches? How often should I stretch? How long should I hold for it to be most effective?

I'm not asking for warm-up stretches. I want to know the best and/or quickest way to be able to do a split without hurting myself.

The book Streching by Bob Anderson has a section on training to do full splits, and I know someone on Bullshido used a stretching machine to do it.

It's going to be dependant upon your genetics, size, time of day and temperature outside. (not kidding)

Stretch for 2-3 minutes per stretch to increase the flexibilty. 30 seconds isn't going to do it.

You might consider taking up yoga.

I got my stretching routine from the old book Working Out Without Weights, a gymnast routine that works pretty well. I'm still a good ways away from a full split in either direction, but it helped me a lot and they have some exercises that will help you achieve the front split as well. I was never very flexible before, but that routine combined with some loosening up exercises (mostly joint rotations and the like) helped me a lot.

A good way to get to a split is to stretch, legs apart as far as you can facing the wall, then get a friend to push your hip forward towards the wall.

*edit: If you're really ambitious, you can ask your friend to force you all the way. You'll rip everything, but if you stretch while it's healing then (according to my friend) the muscles will heal long and you'll be flexible.

Even better than that is to sit spread eagle, face to face with a partner, feet to feet, and pull on each other, back and forth.

Or better yet, put your back against a wall and have a partner lift your leg up as high as possible and hold it for a few.
