Arm bar escapes
The best thing to learn is how to get out of the disadvantageous positions that your opponent is putting you in to put you in the arm lock. Learn the stacking gaurd pass, the shoulder escape, the oompa and the hip sweep from the gaurd. The bottom position of a side mount, and when your opponent has the rear mount are bad positions too. Ask your instructor, and if he's competent he'll give you good advice on how to escape those positions.
Hmm, this is what I've been doing: when in the guard, keep your posture. Control their body with one hand gripping the lapel and one hand controlling a leg so he can't sweep/throw over for armbar.
If you find yourself on side, try to turn and face your opponent keeping your arm/shoulder that he's trying to armbar on the ground. If he can't get under your arm, he can't armbar.
If you find yourself under mound, keep elbows close. Bump your opponent when he tries to grab an arm/lapel. You can also grab one arm and bridge over if you catch your opponent off balance.
If you need to 'escape', the key thing is to get your elbow outside their hips. If they've got a strong grip on your hand they can just pull you into it so you've got to explode and pull out if you feel your opponent going for it. Best thing to do is not let them get that arm.

Look into the Dog Brothers Raven. They practice something called the stinky stick. You could use a variation with your thumb. I would let go of the armbar.
