Wouldn't a "rudimentary" knowledge of grappling include escapes from the mount? I know that's probably the first thing I wanted to learn. Of course getting good enough to actually use stuff like the knee/elbow escape and the oompah is another thing entirely. I'm hardly the most qualified to say this (since I have yet to start a regular grappling class schedule), but if you want to know how to actually use the escapes (rather than just know about them), you're going to have to take everyone's advice and step onto the mat, take your chokes and armbars and learn the real (hard) way.

the oompah lol you mean the fat midgets from willy wonka's chocholate factory or the upa which is the basic mount escape.
    Eduardo "Why'd you stop."

Me "I was kicked in the head by the guys sparring next to me."

Eduardo "Ino what happened but i didnt say you could stop."

Me "Um.. I guess I keep going."

Eduardo "You dont stop until i say stop, you dont get tired until i say your tired, keep going."

Barring grappling training your best bet is to flail and whimper while screaming "NOT IN THE FACE!!!!".
Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?

ROTFL, no wonder it doesn't work for me :)

I'll add the upa to my list of basics to work on as well.

ok, lie flat on your back, then with both hands explosively push up on the chest. hard! as you are doing this turn to your side while keeping both arms fully extended. this should work on just about anybody that isn't twice your weight, and there are NO counters to this move!

To answer Mayhem, I live in Wollongong.

Thanks to lifetime and infidel for your simple escapes. Thanks DaveMustaine for the link.

The reason I asked the question is because I simply wanted to know if escape from such a position is possible at all. After seeing a video of Tito Ortiz on Letterman, and how he had the reporter in a side mount, I was thinking how little I know about how to defend if I was in a similar bad situation. The guy on the bottom was flailing bigtime! It scared me how helpless he was!

BTW guys, how old is deus ex machina? Is this guy serious or trying to be funny?
