Why is that everyone talks about how you wouldn't want to grapple on broken glass in an alleyway.
Where are you people fighting ?
You need to forget about Mcdojo's and martial arts. Petition your council to clean up all the broken glass.

Because it is the truth. When most people are attacked it will on pavment in alley or dark place. Not all just most. Glass is a very real danger. But so could a rusty screwdriver or nail. none of that would be fun to roll on.

Ok. I see. That was a great opportunity to train with Hyun-Su Lim.
I trained with Ji Han Jae(a student of Choi Yong Shul 1949-1956), but he never really taught any ground techniques besides restraining techniques after taking someone down. Same-type of techniques he taught Presidents Rhee's bodyguards at the "Blue House" in S. Korea in the late 50's and early 60's. He now calls his system, "Sin Moo Hapkido."

If that is the case, knowing how to grapple is a very good idea.
I don't know why anyone thinks it will be a long-drawn out fight on the ground. Against someone with superior training against one with little or no training, the lesser trained combatant is going to be the one with a back full of debris from a takedown or slam. The better grappler will be the one on top beating the **** out of him, choking him, or breaking a limb on him.
In that situation, there's not much "rolling around".
If the better grappler is on his back for any reason, it's probably because he tripped or otherwise fell. In that case, how is NOT knowing how to grapple going to help? An untrained person on his back not only is laying on all that debris, but now he is at a major disadvantage being in a position he doesn't know how to fight from.
