I've never heard of or seen anything like that "shin surfing"

I've always been taught "knee on stomach" or "knee on chest" for setups for armbars

I would think that the way that the guy was doing it in the vid would make him very open to being rolled since he was so far over. I've been taught to keep my knee in the middle to help keep my balance with the other foot posted out to the side.

And I've never been subbed by a shin to the neck..... can't really think of a way that could happen without the use of a collar

    We call it knee ride.

We learnt a technique which I have yet to pull off in rolling, whereby you go for the triangle, their head goes up to prevent you from clamping down, as they do you let go, snake your foot under their jaw, turn your shin into their neck, grab the back of the head (clinch) and pull down onto your shin. Shin choke.

ya, the bjj blue belts I train with can pull it off sometimes, but for the rest of us mortals: good luck!

and actually when I think they're doing the gogoplata, they grap their foot around the back of the head instead of the head itself but I could be wrong, regardless it's a move that I'll not be worrying about landing for a while

I'm skeptical about that shin surfing. Couldn't you just wrap your arm around the non-surfing leg and sweep? He could post, but it just doesn't seem very stable. Or grab the arm on the opposite side and sweep to that side. That seems like it would work. And that "takedown" from the clinch at the end was bullshit.

I'm not so sure about this position but not having ever tried it I am hesitant to slam it. He looks very off balance to me or there is a high potential for him to be very off balanced with this. I personally put the point of my knee onto his stomach or better yet onto his sternum and keep the other leg out so that I have a nice base. Almost anything they do when doing this puts them in a position for a finishing move. If all your weight is coming down into one point (the knee cap) as opposed to spread out over a whole shin the potential for more pain is there. Just my opinion though. :qbluepira

Basically, shin on stomach is a retarded position to stay in, and it's fundamentally different from knee on stomach.
