Unfortunately, the 'run-away' solution was what I was coming up with too.

So as a real-world self defense art - grapping is only appropriate for a one-on-one encounter with an unarmed opponent? I've trained a bunch of disarm techniques in TKD and Kempo, but I'm not sure I'd trust most of them to work.

Still, if you want to win a formalized competition, BJJ is the way to go.

Depending on the school, there are self defense techniques that are used in bjj. Many schools just focus on the sport aspect.

If you do any type of clinch, stand up, or throw work I think that would be very useful in a street situation.

I personally just pull guard regardless of who or where I am and start working on setting up the helicopter sweep.

No, you are now in the Emergency Room in a coma and desperately clinging to life as your family is wailing in the waiting room agonizing over whether or not to pull the plug. :angel7:

Don't try to pull guard against someone that is armed with a pistol.

It's a proven fact that a man with a knife can close the distance of like 50 feet before an experienced police officer and draw, aim, and fire.

Using my massive intellect and unsurpassed leaps of logic it is possible to pull guard on an armed assailant 50 feet away without being shot. Once guard is pulled, you are bulletproof. My evidence? Have you ever heard of anyone being shot after pulling guard? No, you haven't. So there~
