There's some that are cheaper, maybe around 200 USD and they can work out okay as well. Just go ghetto with it and use a heavy bag on the floor, you'd be surprised what you can do with just that.

You can throw the heavy bag and you can fall on it, or it can fall on you.
Better know as Mexican Grappling or "How to tackle a burrito".

You can practice mobility drills on it just like you were saying with the basketball as well as using it for bagwork for the ground. You can do suplexes with it, bridge with it, etc. There's a lot you can do with just a simple heavy bag. Most of the stuff I learned with it was mostly for regular wrestling, but it could easily be used for other styles. Besides, it's usually available and doesn't cost an ungodly amount of money.

Simple works surprisingly well for getting results. Look at Steve Justa :)

I practice my deadly RNC by taking flying leaps at semi-wild foals that my boss wants dewormed, and hanging on for dear life until they sort of stop running enough to put a halter on. If nothing else, I'm buff, and I can latch that sucker on in a flash. :tongue8:

In all (rare) seriousness, get your basics strong, like bridging, leg hooks and the like so that you can do them without thinking about it. Doing that sort of stuff with a heavy bag would probably also work.
    You're just JEALOUS!

The books The Triangle and Passing the Guard have entire sections on solo and 2-man drills you can do to improve things like hip movement, standing and moving with base and posture, bridging, rolling, surviving the stack, etc.

You can find both of these books reviewed in the Gear forum.
