I feel like we still need a larger number of Judo purists out there to ensure the survival of the art.
I wouldn't worry too much about the survival of the art, even in the US. I've seen clubs with a handful of practitioners soldier along for years. Judo has too much to offer.
That said, I don't see the US ever becoming a major Judo power. Why? Because most of our best genetic stock pursues the big $$$ sports available here, like Football, Basketball, Baseball. Hard to turn down a good opportunity to get a college scholarship w/a possible multi-million dollar contract to follow. And our Wrestlers have a much better chance at scholarships/financing than our Judoka do.
The best way for you to help the art/sport continue is to become a good instructor.
