    Axe Kicks

I'm sure by now everyone knows what an axe kick is and how its supposed to be used. I'm sure we all know it has been used in fighting. My question is this however - is it worth spending some time training and sparring with especially? I dont ever use it in sparring, and I never practice it (mostly because its kinda hard to do against a hanging or free standing bag). Do you think it would be a valuable stand up technique?

Also, any one got any good drills for axe kicks (besides someone holding a pad and you kicking it)

It may sound stupid, but I use it as an intimidation tactic. A kick to the head is a pretty forceful way to get your point across and if you are willing to come down on someone's skull from the top to make your point, it has in the past given them pause for thought. "Maybe I should be a little more cautious with this guy." But never use it when takedowns are in play.

How else would you look cool?
I can't really do spinning flying attacks yet.

It feels so great when you land it.
I've finally landed a few times late last year.
I'm most pissed it was never on video though.
I will have to remedy that. I like poetry.

It's pretty hard to land an Axe Kick without telegraphing it; you'd either have to feint and fake out your opponent and catch him sleeping, or you'd probably throw it into a combination to punish an opponent thats dumb enough to retreat in a straight line back.

Speaking from TKD experience, Axe kicks are either used as counter-attacks or follow ups to retreats. It's the kind of kick that forces your opponent to move; you'll rarely see someone try to block it.

I pulled my hamstring doing an axe kick when I was much younger. It was a very awesome injury. The best analogy I can think of is getting to 30mph in your car as fast as you can then throwing it into reverse and hitting the gas. The transmission = my leg.

There's a picture floating around on the internet of a guy coming down with an axekick right into someone eye socket. It looks fantastic.

Sweep the hands away and follow up with a good overhand or cross, axe kicks do a pretty fair job of opening someone up for a good punchering!

it is indeed a good way to open youre oponents block, but i almost always use it a counter, its also fun to do it spinning with a combo, but those dont hit as much as the normal version,.its also fun to do it shot and fast to the chest instaid of the shoulder or head.

And I hate those people with decent footwork.
I need to make up a good combo to throw it with.

    Anyone have one?
