OK, those of you that know me around here know I favor Tai Chi. But I am convinced of the effectiveness of BJJ. I also like the kicks from Muay Thai. Some of the hand work from boxing is quite effective. So like Bruce Lee said, take what is useful and reject the rest. So here is MY MMA By distance:

Long Range - Front kicks, Roundhouse Kicks, Cross Kicks, Side Kicks
Medium Range - Jabs, right cross, hooks and upper cuts.
Trap Area - Palm strikes, finger strikes, and knife edge strikes from Tai Chi. Elbows and Knees
Ground Work - Body positioning and submissions from BJJ.

All Strikes (including kicks) would work towards the various meridian points I have picked up from Tai Chi. In my opinion, I still think Chi has electrical properties and alot of these points work to upset that balance. That is why they are done with the fingers, one knuckle punches and palms. I have also noticed in researching BJJ and Tai Chi the kneck area (either striking or choking) is one of the main effective attack areas.

Sidenote: PeeDee, I think I found someone to spar with. Trouble is we will have to wrestle on hardwood floors. No problem, we will get knee and elbow pads and work from the kneeling position. If I get this rolling, I will work striking in later.

I appreciate alot of you on this board who have forced me to look deeper into my own martial arts practice. I feel confident the system I will be working on will work for me!

how do you use roundhouse kicks for long range, are you striking with the shins?

Looks like a good combo. It might be worth working in a bit of ukemi from judo or aikido so you can survive the takedowns onto a hard floor a bit better. Unless BJJ already handles this, I'm completely ignorant of BJJ.

BJJ {SamHarber] teaches both wrestling and Judo takedowns, as well as breakfalls.

Fron kick, side kick cross kick: 99% of th eitme you;re not going to even land these, the side kick may land but probably not with much impact.
Rather than doing a "front kick" you should do "Push kicks": use when some1 is ner you to keep them away OR when they are at a distance you can "poke" your leg out to stop them moving forwards, at least for a short time.
Roundhouse kick: Learn how to do all the different types, but first find out how to do anyone properly...

Front/side kicks can work, it's just risky.

Unless you're positive you can pull it off keep both feet on the floor.

I;ve tried to kick people as hard as possible with side and front kicks, in general they do nothing, however somtimes with repated sidekicks you can slightly wind the person, but it's not worth having to throw around 5-10 kicks, risk getting them grabed just to slightly wind someone, when there's a good chance you won't hurt some, and an even better chance you won't even land the kick anyway.

Blade, the sidekick it the most powerful kick the body can throw and has greater penetrating power than roundhouse.

I don't know about you guys but the front kick is my fastest kick and I land it quite often, favorit target is the chin but the most succefull target it from the groing to the stomach.
