Trying to get back to REAL topics instead of the rash of senseless traffic.
This is inspired from a discussion on another board. One of the martial myths I am greatly opposed to is that "Size and strength don't matter" Many schools will tell pple that a 150lb guy is easily going to defeat a 250lb guy. They also promote the fact that BIG and STRONG = SLOW and RELYS SOLELY ON STRENGTH. I say all this is BS. MA training is a good thing to have but it doesn't level the playing feild.

It matters about the person and their skill level. A 250lb guy who knows nothing about MA wil most likely lose against a very skilled 150lb pound guy. But when both are equal, the stronger one will most likely win, and big people can be fast.

Well put MM4, my instructor has trained all over the world...when he first started rolling, it was with some very good Japanese guys, very light...they all weighed about 130-160, he was very muscled 180, they kicked his ass on the ground.
It was almost a year before he tapped any of them out, they had a very high skill level. They were all over him.
I agree though, no skill...a light person trained is good to go. My partner & I weigh the same, but he has the testosterone, so he can still take me. Someone heavier just starting, I have little problem with. That's standing game or ground.
I do agree also that if you have a lightweight & a heavyweight...both of equal training...the little guy is screwed...for the most part.
I was watching Pride 21 last night, I don't remember if it was the Bob Sapp fight, or another one...the the weights were close, but the bigger of the two jumped on his opponent & kicked his ass in about 9 seconds...I'm sure I'll remember which fight it was in a sec....NOPE..lol

I believe size matters, not just because of strength - a guy can have reach on you too. Like when Hollyfield had a half a foot of reach on Tyson. That can make a lot of difference.
That being said, technique can make a lot of difference too. Like you - I would pick solid technique over just plain strength. A lot of big guys don't even take the time to learn good tech because they are so big nobody messes with them or because they are strong enough to beat most average attackers. Also, in training its hard for them to find a challenge when its just grappling or boxing.
(Also, most little guys with the discipline and brains to learn good technique don't run around getting in fights for the heck of it with guys twice their size too often, so the big guys don't fight them that too often.)
I'd pick uncanny speed over strength though. A lot of speed is technique but some of it is just having good reflexes and reaction-time (which comes with experience and work) .. If a guy is too fast for you to hit then you grab him and pull him in but if he cracks you in the neck, pokes your eye, kicks your balls and then lands 3 punches to your head before you can move again - then you are going to be in a little trouble. Dodging speed and punching speed can give you the first 5 or 10 strikes in a fight if you know what you are doing. If any of those strikes can get to targets like the temple, the neck, the groin or the joints then you can get a serious advantage. Its not like boxing with gloves on - real fights don't go 12 or 15 rounds. They last 1 or 2 minutes at best because bone on bone is a different story.
Its not like lifting weights can give you stronger balls or knees. Your corotid artery is still on the outside of your neck no matter how big it gets. Your jaw and your temple aren't steroid enhanced. But yea, you have a bigger jaw, bigger knees and so on .. so you can take more punishment to some targets. No little dude is going to break your ribs.
If a guy is strong enough though.. I mean, not a 150# guy but lets say 175# (like Royce in UFC 1) or 190# then he most likely has enough power to break anyone's leg or knock anyone out. Enough strength is enough strength.
The big guy still has the edge though. Speed isn't that intimidating. Nobody says, that dude is fast! Lets run! - When a 300# dude is chasing you though. You run. The psychology there alone is a big edge.
A big fast guy who knows good tech though. What are you going to do? If Kurt Angle is coming at you then just hope you get in a few lucky shots early.

Oh, by the way, hello everyone.
Back to the subject...I agree that it's a psychological edge to be bigger, and psychology is a factor in fighting. At my job (bouncer/security in a drug zone) people like to talk trash to my partner because he's 5-8, 170 lbs, but I'm 6-2, 260, and people don't as readily argue with me. That's an advantage I already have, in case something goes down.

Your skills as a M.A.tist is just one of many variables that determine the result of the fight. There are plenty of others Size, strength, weight, aggressiveness, smarts, situation, experience, reflexes, luck ... are just a few of those (even before friends and weapons).
However, from a hobbyist point of view, with limited time and working in front of the computer. I can hardly change my size, I very limited in increasing my strength (I do go to Jim but genetics play a huge roll here as well), increasing my weight by getting Fat isn't healthy nor useful. And of course I can't determine the situation or change my luck.
Learning any MA is one of the more proficient ways to improve your chances. Not because the other factors don't play, but because it's one of the only factors even an hobbyist can change dramatically.
