Most people I have heard from seem to like it better for throwing/unbalancing etc and the contact surface being more often the forearms or even elbows. .
From my own understanding (I'm admittedly fairly new and have zero formal instruction aside from books), it can also be used to strike at soft areas, particularly the armpit. I used it on a friend of mine in some light sparring and he could barely lift his arm for a day or two.

...then, since he's 100 lbs heavier than me and plays football, he took me to school like the nancy little girl I am, but that's beside the point.

The_Fan, please immediately cease pretending to know anything about xingyi whatsoever. You threw out your shoulder doing a beng quan.

Find a teacher, any martial art* will do, and pretend to know something about that instead.

    *that doesn't suck
I would liken it to the boxing or the muay thai of internal kung fu, even though that's like calling apples the oranges of the apple world. --WalkOn

The downside of being double-jointed. The ligaments in my shoulder are so loose I've thrown it out reaching for salt before.

It was a pretty good clip; I didn't see much in the way of xing yi, but the guy was obviously skilled.

From my understanding, the 5 Elements are really just 5 ways of manifesting power (jing). Pi Quan doesn't have to be an open hand like the form. It can be any "splitting" or "breaking" movement, usually in a vertical circle, forward from up to down. Just like Zuan Quan is drilling, it doesn't have to be an uppercut. It can be any spiralling forward strike that manifests jing in a pinpoint energy. In fact, according to classical form, a hook punch is considered Zuan, just moving sideways. And Peng Quan can be to the face, stomach, groin, anything. Heng Quan doesn't need to be that specific palm-up-fist punch like Zuan, it can be an open knife hand or a vertical fist. What is important is the crossing power. It's all concepts, not specific techniques. If you really study this theory in depth, you can see that ANY martial technique can be classified into one of the 5 elements, based on the intent and power being applied in the technique. It's really quite fascinating.
