Let me introduce you to my friends: Hand, Elbow and Knee.
If all you wish for is to improve your kicks, the school you were at doesn't sound that bad. The guide sparred with you according to the sports rules, which do limit the contact and target area.
But, if you have had other types of training, and have your own strategy, not limited to contests. This place might be very good just to learn to kick fast and with some accuracy and even force, without the fight strategy one will need for a real confrontation (something over-rated in my personal opinion).
