From what I remember of my distant judo training, the trouble with gi is that they are much, much more robust than ordinary 'street' clothes (particularly the jackets).
I'm guessing, but if you trained yourself to reflexively use the opponents clothes as a handhold/choking appliance (rather than grab their limbs/body as in no-gi training like wrestling), and tried it on somebody wearing a regular shirt or t-shirt, isn't there a danger that it would just rip away in your hand, leaving you a little confused ? -

You are mistaken. They don't fall apart like tissue paper the moment they are touched. They stretch and sometimes tear.
But if you stand there confused in the middle of a fight because someone's clothes got torn, you have bigger problems than what kind of training you had. You suck, you are easily confused, and are about to get the **** beat out of you regardless of what you study. -
