    One thing I'm taught is to hug the arm tightly instead of just gripping with yours hands at the wrist. Both work fine, but it seems that when you trap it in the crooks of your elbows it's harder for them to escape.

    You can hyper extend the arm both ways but one way to escape an armbar is to turn into your opponent. By holding his arm with his palm facing upwards you've given him more leverage to turn into you.

    The four things you should do for every armbar:
    1) Hip Penetration
    2) Knees squeezing
    3) Top leg bent
    4) His little finger on your chest.

    One way to prevent people turning into you by putting their palm on your chest and rolling their body away is to get a handhsake grip on their hand using the handshake where you grip each other's thumb.

    Alas I was. I'm now learning bjj AT A SCHOOL!
    I had to move to do it but it was worth it :)

    Thanks for the tips. I'm still not sure why thumb up is better than palm up but I'll take your word for it.

    Congrats on attending a school!

    I'm guessing thumb up puts the elbow joint, or twists the tendons, in some extra painful way.

    Excellent advice - I like to add no 5
    - Always control his arm with two hands; have a strong grip, 'hug' the arm s described above.
    Have seen to many players who created a perfect armbar - only to loose it , 'cause the other guy was able to free his arm.
    Ground work is so much about getting all the little things right.

    Can you explain that a bit more?
    I think the armbar overstretches the joint between humerus and ulnar.
    I assume we talk about juji - gatame.
    How does the radius position affect that ?

    radius and ulna are the forearm, when your arm is out and your palm is up these bones are parellel and when you thumb is up the cross over each other. not only will the elbow dislocate but radius will snap easier laying on top of the ulna.
