Works great against guys with no arms. But if they have arms they have a tendency to push on your elbow and/or buck you off to relieve pressure.
If you like this kind of choke, look into what some call the 'bread cutter'. A very similar choke, from the N/S position. That one is vicious, you won't get bucked off, and even if the guy does have two arms he isn't going to be able to stop it. -

Can you start a new thread and show us this bread cutter? I've never heard of it. Thanks.

I will show the bread cutter.
Start from a modified 4quarters hold. North/South for you BJJ types.

The MODIFIED version of this is with one arm over and one arm under theirs. The UNDER arm reaches over the opponent, then under their armpit and then reach behind and grab their collar.
Okay, so now you have a N/S position with arms in different positions. You now move off to the side that you have the UNDER grip. Use the OTHER hand that is basically pinning the opponents arm to his side and reach back and grab his collar. Now cross your elbow over his throat. He cannot move. And because the first hand is holding the back of his collar it creates an incredible pressure on the neck. Here is a picture of the choke being used in competition. You will need some imagination to see the hand going across the throat, and the position he was in before it was applied. Maybe I can come up with better pictures or a better explanation.

As you can(not) see, Mike has his left arm under his opponents arm, reaching back under and grabbing his opponents collar. His right hand grabbed his opponents right collar with his THUMB INSIDE. He swings his elbow across the throat and slices downward. Like a breadcutter.Last edited by Yrkoon9; 1/21/2005 5:15pm at .

what you described is how I learned the paper cutter, but starting from side control
IOW
One hand underneath gripping back of gi at neck, the other hand cross lapel grip with thumb inside and choking downward
is this different than what you just described besides the N/S setup?"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration." -A. Lincoln
