A question for people who do Kyokushin.

I know it's against the rules to punch to the head in a knockdown tournament, but do you punch to the head when you spar?

My instructor broke with tradition and got gear to go full contact-so maybe it's not Kyokushin any more?

In my dojo, an IKO1 (or Matsui) Kyokushin school, we don't hit or elbow the head or neck during sparring. We do practice head stikes (punches, chops, elbows) but, at least in my experience, never against resisting opponents and very rarely against another student at all. I can't speak for overseas branches or "splinter" groups -- I think head strikes are more common in those schools. (For example, Daido-juku has a lot more tournament-legal techniques.)

There's a chance I might move next year, and there's a Kyokushin dojo in the town where I might go. I've been thinking I might like to try Kyokushin and I was curious to know how the sparring goes.

In my classes we practiced striking the head and allowed light contact for kyu rank students in sparring only dan ranks got to beat the **** out of each other.

Most rules state no closed fist to the face not avoiding the head all together.

I can picture two grown men kiai'ing and slapping eachother in the head. Hell I'd watch that.

When and where did you train Asia?

I first started in 1984 at Camp Zama Japan. Mainly because the Shotokan teacher was leaving and a Kyokushin club had started. I bounced to several clubs since then.

Most recently:
NW Institue of MA which taught Shaolin Kung Fu and Kyokushin Karate

CHAMPIONS Karate & Gymnastics
both these schools are in Lawton, OK.

I visited a club in Antwerp, Nederlands

And Now I am training under a former Romanian Competitor who works as a security guard on the base here.
