K-1 promoter to be indicted on tax evasion
Kyodo News Service
TOKYO, Dec. 8 (Kyodo) - Tokyo prosecutors are investigating a promoter of a popular martial arts match, known as K-1, for allegedly evading paying some 200 million yen in corporate tax over four years to September 2000, informed sources said Saturday.
Kazuyoshi Ishii, 49, chief of Seidokaikan, or the International Practical Karate-Do Association, insists his K-1 promotion company used several hundreds of millions of yen off the record to invite foreign fighters to Japan, but the prosecutors aim to indict him without arrest by the end of the year, the sources said. Ishii is suspected of failing to declare more than 700 million yen in corporate income during the four-year period, they said.
The five-year statue of limitations on parts of the alleged tax evasions will expire in January, they said. K-1, launched in 1993, is a series of competitions mixing a number of martial arts, such as karate, kickboxing and kung fu. Ishii established Seidokaikan in 1981, and launched the promotion company in 1996 with a capital of 30 million yen. The company's annual sales reached some 2.1 billion yen in September 2000.
