I'ved talked to a number of the Brazilians around town -- guys who train BJJ the way other men watch sports -- and their feeling is that if you can take one punch, any punch, to get in on the guy, you can take him down and own his ass.

I'm glad thats their feelings. Don't really care too much how a bunch of Brazillians feel, ( god why does everyone assume their nationality makes them somehow better at BJJ than any of us? Cuz it has nothing to do with experience does it?)
And if they feel like saying stupid things like that then i suggest they say them to Chuck Liddell or Vanderlai Silva.
Look I'm a MMA guy. I actually prefer to fight from the ground but be realistic. Watch some Pride or UFC tapes. And THEN tray and tell me that all you have to do is cover up and run at the guy.

I can't for the life of me see why :)
Nah, he's not fxking with you, he's too young to remember what a turntable even is. Damn kids these days, with all their new fangled cds and mp3s.
And I'm gonna reply anyhooo....
And I happen to have plenty of experience with this topic, I spar two guys here, one only grapples, one is a karate and judo bb. If we restrict the rules of the game to grappling, they both almost always win. If we allow strikes, the grappler often looses (geezuz, kids, a decade or two in Kyokushin dojo and you don't think anyone ever learns to sprawl?) and even if he gets me down he has to submit fast and hard or I'll do something like punch him in the throat or like what was done in a mma nhb'd match I was reading at the super market-as the guy was going down he gave his opponent a double neck strike with the edges of both hands, at the same time-took the fight out of the opponent.
After years of sparring the multi bb guy, we now congratulate each other if we have managed to avoid hurting ourselves. He's short and very strong; I'm tall and relatively weak. His game is to get inside and strike or throw, or more likely, strike then throw. My game is to keep him at bay with strikes-it's all timing. I've knocked him onto his back with one left and he's body slammed me and wrapped me up like an unhappy pretzel.
It's obvious reading the nhb's results that some end with submission, some end with strikes..read Dan Severing comments on ground and pound (search and yee shall find) for an experienced grappler's views

Fisting Kittens, everyone knows that having a Brazilian accent strikes fear into your opponents' hearts.
Which guy would you want to fight less?
"He-llo, I ahm a blockbelt in Brasilian zhoo-zitsu"
"Yo, my name is Tony, I took some BJJ last year"
Clap your hands everybody,
