In a newbie (yay, clap clap) and I see some people blue in the face from defending their TMA style. I've trained in both pure striking and pure grappling for years.

Let me tell you something.

I don't care how many boards you can punch through. I can punch through a lot too.

I don't care how hard you can kick. I can kick real hard too.

You may as well be calling your opponent names if you are off balance. Save your energy. Your earth shattering strikes will be useless once you're out of your stance and off your center.

Lie on the ground, see how many boards you can punch through.

Get on your stomach, see how powerful your kicks are.

Hell, stand on one foot and try punching stuff. Any stuff.


If I charge in to take you down, you've got one very minute and very small chance of knocking me out (and you will indeed have to knock me out) in order to stop me. All I have to do is run at you, head down, face covered. You, on the other hand have to have perfect timing, positioning, and power. And you only get one shot.

Once you are off your balance, on the ground, on your knees, it won't matter how hard you can kick or punch the bag. You need your legs, your hips and your balance for that kind of power. You won't have it.

That's.... when you're fxcked.

In a one on one fight, you are always one single-leg, double leg, o-goshi, leg sweep, hip toss, or hard shove away from getting into a ground fight.

Ever see guys in tournaments demonstrate power techniques while curled up in a ball on the ground? Guess why.

This is just honesty. I am not an advocate of any "best" martial art, I think that's like saying what's the best color or best music. However, you have to realize that someone with more grappling knowledge than you is at a serious, phsyical, real world advantage. Everytime we get into stuff like this is alway something simple that is overlooked.

Instead of the ART vs ART or STRIKER vs GRAPPLER it would be much more intresting and enlighting discussing EXPERIENCE and Training.
