I assume that you're only talking about BJJ class. I'd be surprised to hear that judo people don't work transitions from kneeling to standing in order to improve position for going back to the ground.

probably because in shiai if one person stands up while on the ground then the players are reset. Start sitting facing a kneeling opponent. This will cause you to use your legs more for fencing and hooking. Just remember your hands are faster, so use them and have your legs catch up when he goes to pass.
Constantly attack his balance with your hooks. Create a push pull with hands and feet.
