Schools Around Schools
I'm applying for graduate school this year, and wanted your guy's personal takes on these schools, and any info on schools that offer muay thai / kickboxing and BJJ. I intend on getting involved with groundwork following Hanukkah.
1. *** Bowling Green State Uni
3. **U Colorado
4. *Kent State U.
5. *SUNY Albany
6. *U of Memphis
8. U Alabama
9. U Maryland, Baltimore County
10. U of Louisville
11. U Pitt
12. U South Florida
Ignore UIC - that's Chicago, and I know that area well enough. If you can give me any info on the type of places these schools are located in, I'd be most appreciative and forthcoming with da +rep.
Thanks in advance.

BJJ.org has a listing for a school at the YMCA in Albany (found that when I was checking the area around Rensselaer), that's all I got.

How badly did you do on the GRE?Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

Unless you know something about the psychology programs of these institutions, I'd be more interested in knowing about schools around these areas.

What are you applying for, M.Sc. or Ph.D.? Either way I would be trying to get into the research groups run by the various Profs in the dept., not the schools on their own.

I have a 30 Page MSWord document of all the professors I'm interested in, including the abstracts of their pertinent research in the last 20 years.
That was the exclusive criteria I followed. An excerpt:
Paul Karoly – Arizona State U:
A goal systems-self-regulatory perspective on personality, psychopathology, and change.
Review of General Psychology. Vol 3(4) Dec 1999, 264-291.
American Psychological Assn/Educational Publishing Foundation, US
A motivational framework is presented linking personal goals and self-regulatory functions to normal personality, psychopathology, and the processes of change. First, the utility of goals as a "final common analytic pathway" or integrative unit is considered. Next, the premises of an emerging, goal-centered conception of adaptive functioning are discussed as a prelude to the author's outlining of a multidimensional working model of "goal systems." Reactive depression is reconceptualized in terms of specific self-regulatory dysfunctions under the influence of goal systems to illustrate how dysfunctional goal systems can serve as the central organizing component of psychopathology. A set of 10 propositions pinpoints goal-based sources of vulnerability to self-regulatory dysfunction in depression. A set of 5 propositions details the potential goal-based sources of maintenance of self-regulatory deficits. Finally, 14 theory-based principles of psychotherapeutic change are proposed. Then you need to start contacting these Profs directly, ASAP, if you haven't already done so. For instance, just because you get into ASU doesn't mean that you'll automatically be able to work with this Paul Karoly. That will depend on his funding, your ability to obtain a teaching assistantship, and the availability of an opening within his reseach group. But then you probably already know all of this.
