hey man, i think i was the one that told you that...
lei tai does indeed exist still... next event is http://www.usckfnorth.org/main/content/view/15/26/
these guys organize an event in baltimore every july http://usckf.org/
you don't have to be from a kung fu school to fight.
takedowns are allowed but you can't touch the knee on the way down (so wrestling shoots don't count for points, but if you keep the knee off the mat you can do a high shoot.)"Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. You don't truly love your children unless you allow them to get punched in the face." - chi-conspiricy
"When I was a little boy, I had a sailor suit, but it didn't mean I was in the Navy." - Mtripp on the subject of a 5 year old karate black belt
"Without actual qualifications to be a Zen teacher, your instructor is just another roundeye raping Asian culture for a buck." - Errant108
"Seriously, who gives a **** what you or Errant think? You're Asian males, everyone just ignores you, unless you're in a krotty movie." - new2bjj -

not as far as i know.
martial arts tournaments are very hard to hold in new york.
for one thing they used to be illegal (i guess that has changed.) but the liability and insurance costs are out of control here.
for that reason, most tournaments are held in jersey, and even they tend to not hold full contact fights (again, insurance is WAY too expansive for that stuff.)
i heard about george crayton holding a tournament in long island, but he didn't have a lei tai division. my organization hosts the wong fei hung memorial tournament every september, and we don't have a lei tai division either (i would if i was in charge, but i am not.)
so far it seems that the baltimore one is it for the east coast, which sucks cause the only tournaments that interest me at this point are MMA and lei tai."Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. Oh sweet thank Ming
I think I'll try to get in on this...seems like some fast paced fighting...I dig man I digSecret moves such as hitting a thing with your hand and hitting a thing with your leg have been stolen and degenerated by arts like karate, boxing, muay-thai, Kung-fu, and basketball. -Epicurious
I for one welcome our new Ninja overlords.

I figure fighting a group of chunners would be like water torture, its not the force as such, just the constant trickle of chain punches wearing down your sanity. -The Juggernoob -

yes, the platform is also called a lei tai, and for some reason, the name has also come to represent a ruleset as well.
basic rules:
you can punch, kick, knee elbow and throw/takedown as well as run someone off the platform.
once someone goes down points are awarded if the technique was clean, and the fighters are stood up, and the action continues. (it is no longer a win if you get your opponent off the platform, just a lot of points.)
equipment is headgear with face cage, and fingerless gloves (unforrtunately mainly the "cobra mitt" type, but some of us are lobbying for shooto gloves to be allowed.)
fights are full contact.
there are more specific rules at the website i listed.
IMHO- it's a great ruleset, but would be better with some limited groundfighting added in, better gloves, and i hate the face cages. the nice thing is that it separates the kung fu schools who fight and those who don't."Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art.
