I've had friends get knocked out wearing the foam had pads, so they dont have that much protection in them. As stated before, the idea is to reduce concussions, no so much to stop the pain. And being in TKD and haveing woren them, I can say that they do more hurt to vision than good from getting kicked and punched. From a physics stand point, KE = (1/2)mv^2, so the idea was to reduce the velocity, and it does to some extent. But it is still best to keep your hands up. Not to metion they get damn hot after about fifteen minutes. On a plus side of them, i have never seen any one get calluflower ear from getting naled in the ear with them on.

You can do both actually.

A face sheild on head gear is not always a bad thing. Like mentioned before, if the "sparring rules" (read insurance policy) say you can only strike head gear, well face masks open the game up.
In the end do whats best for you.

I was thinking about getting one for stick fighting. I don't like fencing masks (too Expensive) I think these will work okay with theses paded sticks

Anyways I think it might be okay to start out wearing one then as time progresses get rid of it. Most likely your probably using it for point sparring (the type you stop hitting after you score). -
