How are you setting it up? I usually get the triangle when someone is passing my guard. Securing the arm is very important as is turning out your hips but I'm not sure if securing the arm is always the first thing I do.

Edit: Let me re-phrase my statement... I secure the arm as soon as I decide I'm doing the triangle. Typically my leg has already been placed properly by my unknowing opponent.

According to Rigan you need to get the "Hoook" or they will just keep passing your guard. The hook is the angle formed by your leg that is going over their shoulder. He keeps repeating that bending it early and using it to pull you opponent down is VERY important.

So you're more or less saying we have to unbalance them as we hook, or they will stack us?

Your opponenet MUST be pulled down or your hips must be near their head to pull it off, or else your legs just get used like levers for a guard pass.

Remember, guard passing is all about keeping your base while manipulating your opponents legs. Conversely, opening your guard without disrupting the base is a good way to get passed.

For the person in the guard, you must be careful to maintain your base and keep your opponents hips DOWN/AWAY from you when you see the triangle coming.

This simple piece of logic explains to me why I always get rolled over like a dumbarse whenever I try triangle.

That's what I hate about bjj, when someone tells you the answer you feel like a complete moron.

    Thanks McFu. ;)

Succesfully pulled off the triangle last night... remembering to trap the arm, turn the hips so I'm looking in the ear, and hook the leg properly. Awesome.

This is an awesome book and DVD. I recommend getting it from www.bjjtapes.com because Rigan is a part owner so will be getting more of the money.

Just got my hands on it...wow. Before I got the book, I thought, "Gee, kinda odd having an entire book dedicated to one sub." But it's unreal how many ways there are to get a triangle. Haven't watched the DVD yet though.

The only thing that I didn't like is that some of the techs are purely sport BJJ, and wouldn't work in a no-gi situation. However, the only reason I think that is because I like rolling no-gi more than gi.
