move your hips up... with the elbow on the groin as opposed to past it (above it), i've found that my opponents have a better chance of escaping (especially if they're disgustingly good at rolling and stacking, and even better for them if its no gi) (disclaimer speaking out of ignorance of gi, not sure if its easier or not to escape with gi)

I find escaping the armbar is easier with a gi than without. You can get a much better deathgrip on your sleeve than you can on your entire wrist.
