    Pentjak Silat

I just found a school near me that teaches a Kali/Pentjak Silat class. Now I'm interested in the Kali, but have no idea what Silat is all about. They teach both in the same time slot, yet I dont understand how, as one an IMA and the other an FMA. What kind of sparring/ class setup can I expect from both? For now, I just intend to scope it out. If I like it I might go on a semi-regular basis (BJJ and college fill most of my time these days)

They're similar in the way different karates are similar, or different kung fus are similar. From the same geographic area, with systems that have common threads but are disticntly different.

As far as a silat class goes, I would hold it to the same standard you do every class. Do they spar? Is it full contact continuous? If you're going to learn to fight, it doesn't matter internal or external. Of course, if you have some other goals, cool.

I haven't checked out the school yet. I just wanted to get the 411 on silat, really.

Dependant on the instructor, Pentjak Silat can be very good and effective. It is very similar to Kali and well worth checking out. There are some key differences that I've seen. Kali likes to defang the snake, where Silat likes to just kill the snake (generally, not always). Kali likes to step 45-degree angles towards and away from opponent and Silat likes to run the opponent over.

I've found Pentjak Silat to be pretty good, but it would be somewhat hard to spar with because it is very much geared towards breaking people. Yes, it is the classic "too deadly to spar with" argument, but you'll just have to see for yourself. Of course, you should always crosstrain with BJJ or some good grappling art as well.

There are fairly consistent arguments that the FMA's are descendant from the IMA's. I don't agree, but they flow together very well. If the class structure includes sparring, you won't lose out.

Huh? I thought it was that Escrima = Arnis = Kali and that Silat was Indonesian in origin.

Yeah, but the argument is that the arts developed in Indonesia first and migrated into the Philipines.

Interesting. I've only seen silat in a few clips, but the sense I got was that it was markedly different from something like arnis.

It depends on the system of silat. Saying Silat is like saying Kung Fu.
