    Options on the Ground

I've never trained for any kind of groundfighting, so this might be a stupid question, but I'm just curious. I recently bought a couple of DVD's of PrideFC tournaments, and I like them a lot. One thing I noticed though is that most times that it goes to the ground, and one fighter is on top of the other, I believe it's called being in a full mounted position, the fighter on top has many options and seems to be in full control, while the one at the bottom always seems to just avoid getting pounded and wait until the fighter on top tries something or puts himself in a position where the fighter on the bottom can get him off. So I was just wondering, are there really any other options for the fighter who's on his back and mounted? These guys are supposed to be some of the best fighters, so I would assume if there were any other options they would try them, but they always seem to just wait there and avoid getting hit. I'm not really familiar with too many groundfighting terms, so if there are other things that can be done, a quick little description would be cool.

Reversing the position/escaping is your only real option when mounted, though there are numerous ways to do this.

As boring as it may seem, sometimes you have to play the waiting game and wait for the right moment to make you escape/reversal. Strikes become very ineffective from an inferior position. Believe me; if there was something else they could have done, you would have seen it.

Ronin actually showed me a submission from under the mount at the last T.O. throwdown. It blew my mind.

Omega's shown me a submission from under sidemount. The part that made it incredible was that it was a leglock, and my legs were sprawled out pretty far from his body.

The only real option from under mount is to escape, submissions won't work on someone who is good at the mount, or who can punch back.

-I've seen a few subs from this position, but against anyone with a little experience/skill most of them fall apart under pressure, though there are a few escape transitions from this position that can be quickly turned into subs.

Yeah, guys, I know. I just thought it was cool. Believe me, there are some brown belts at my club with the tightest mounts ever, and they are my weight or smaller. The last thing I can think about there is a sub.

So, of course, your best bet by far is escape.

Actually there is a pretty cool armbar from under side control. I have yet to pull it off, but someday...
