Grab his right ankle and push it to the floor, away from his left leg.

    grab your pants
place your head and free hand on the mat
in almost a cartwheel motion pass your feet over your opponent's head
    take side control
    this is lowest risk
it is still possible to go with the counter's momentum to take side control (the person executing omapltta) or turtle to take omaplatta again, but like I said, this is a nice counter

if you just roll out you are a sucker for an armbar and a whole series of submissions including the omaplatta again

if you switch your base and place your far knee into opponent's lower back and roll,
your opponent will be turtled w/your arm in between his legs
all he has to do is roll on his shpoulder closest to you and wham, back to omaplatta

and if you sit up strong to defend, there is obviously a triangle for your opponent, or your opponent can roll backwards on shoulder nearest you to take a beautiful position that sets up a whole series including omaplatta again

and lets not forget the calf splicer! also a nice counter if there

My most successful escape has been to jump over them into side mount, but this relies on them having not yet grabbed my belt, and can be easily countered if they grab my leg or sit up, so I imagine its success rate will drop off as people get wise to my ways.

One thing I've learned to watch for when trying this escape is to not get footlocked when passing my leg by their head. You can see what I mean here:

Speaking of GrappleArts, they have an Omo Plata instructional DVD that is supposed to be awesome:

You can find some more info on the Omo Plata here:

    First and always, common sense:
DON'T get caught in it !!
Any lock, when applied by someone who knows, can be un-escapable.
Counter before the lock is in "motion" to be applied.
Don't overextend your arms ( this applies to EVERY arm lock "counter").
Go with the motion of the lock, not against it.
Try to get your opposing arm in position to clasp hands/wrist, to add resistence to the attempting lock to give you more time to counter.
Realise that, with a stonger opponent, he may be able to "muscle" the lock on...

Position is, as always, the key.

thanks a lot guys, I really like the one where I jump into side control, I'll definitely have to try that next time.

You're welcome. There's a purple belt at my school who omoplatas the **** out of me (and everyone else), so I've gotten to work on my counters to it more than my attacks with it.

You'll also be interested to know that there is also a reverse omoplata. I'm trying to find some pictures of it for you, since I suck at it too much to give a worthy explanation. I'll see if I can get my instructor to let me take some pictures of him teaching one, since I learned a fun one to do against a turtling opponent.

Reverse omoplate would be like a keylock or a four corner arm bar, but with the legs?
