    Counters to Omoplata

    Anybody got any good counters to the Omoplata? I just finally learned it last week. Specifically Omoplata from the guard. We did it a little different than the way showed by Jacare on bjj.org, but the ending is the same.





    The only thing I could do to resist was to sit back up and try to stack the guy while he is in the position in the first picture, and if he tried to sit up I would just roll him back to his back. Then I would try to get one knee around his head to end up over him then shake my arm out of his legs and end up in North/South on top. I think this only works on a sloppy Omoplata though. Can any of you guys help me out with this? Or tell me if this is a viable escape?

    The best one is rolling before they grab your back. Your escape will only work if you have a size/strength advantage.

    This escape will work even if you don't have the size and strength advantage. If you roll before your opponent sits up or grabs your belt/gets an arm over the back, you will get the escape.

    You can probably still roll out of that with a hard enough push from your legs, but if they've pinned your hip to the ground then that's pretty much the end.

    Two ways.

    1) Roll forward, as fast as you can.

    2) Sit backwards into them, but grab your shorts first. Stack them and work your way out.

    There are several ways to counter the omoplata:
    1. Roll forward. This of course then puts you under side control or even under mount. Should be used as a last resort.
    2. Control his other ankle so he can't triangle his legs, get posture and pull your arm free.
    3. Put your head on the floor and jump to the other side, cross face him and get side control. This can be countered though by him sitting up as you jump over.
    4. If he has your left arm, your left hand grabs your belt, your right hand reaches under and grabs his belt, fall on your right side and roll underneath as you pull him over you. He'll land on his knees and you should be able to pull your arm free.
    5. Put the same side knee on his belly, posture up hard and then fall back into kneebar.

    Number 2 is the best method, because you're not letting him have anything.
