I started doing Shootfighting in July 2001. I went to class regularly for 18 months and sporadically in the 18 months that followed, up to today. However, I have watched, I think, a lot of sparring matches, been in a lot of them, watched a lot of fight events and instructionals, and I think about it a lot, I think it's important to think about what you're doing wrong and how to fix it.

Sure, it is important to constantly watch and learn. But I think that is drummerboy's point. American students should focus more on watching and learning than giving out advice. Especially when they have no idea to whom they are giving the advice. I'm a lowly blue belt, but I still don't give out advice to whitebelts unless (1) they specifically ask for it or (2) they are clearly frustrated about some technique I am using to tap or control them when we roll and they have that "I give up" look.

Ok, no one is arguing that only the experienced should give out advise.
Its what constitutes experience that is being debated.

i always thought advice was relevent only to the person giving it. Personally, i give advice when asked and thats from my own expierences. I agree with you Drummer if , by what you wrote, you mean that some people have very little expierence in their arts and are giving advice to people under the notion they are high ranked.

id take advice from a newbie, maybe he sees another side of the story.

Me too. I dont' mind people parroting back what they've been told, either, so long as I get info. I've met HH and Antagony both, one time. They both seemed like good guys, so they're a definite exception to this statement, and I'm sure there are others, but: A humble person would qualify their statements as "my instructor says" or "I only have x amount of time in, but at this point I've personally found". Although if EVERY post had that, it'd get really damned old.

"you got two ears, two eyes and one mouth. that means you should be doing twice as much listening and looking and half as much talking!"

    or something like that...
