Judo is more true to how people fight than a lot of other commonly available martial arts such as karate or TKD. I certainly think it could help in self-defense. Even if you learn self-defense moves later from somewhere else that are illegal in judo your judo skills would make you able to apply them much better than if you didn't have any training.

Try this:
Stand on a chair on some hard surface.
Jump off.
Land squarely on your back.
Then (if you can) get back up onto the chair. Secure a short rope to the ceiling and tie it around you neck.
Jump off the chair again.
Then (if you can) place your arm against he wall and hyper-extend your elbow untill it breaks.
You will have just simulated the efects Judo techniques will have on an opponent. Their relative merit in combat is yours to determine. And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

Judo for self defense, not sure?
