    Newbie Introduction

Hello, Not sure if this is in the right section, but...

I'm Mitchell, I'm a newbie. I've been loosely interested in Martial Arts for a LONG time, since I was a kid.

I trained a little bit in Tae Kwon Do, and a little bit in Soh Bakh Doh, and read a few books by I think Stephen Hayes, or someone like that, on Ninjutsu.

Never really got past a few low ranks, never got into board kicking...

Anyone know any good schools they recommend, in Alabama, and especially near Birmingham?

Well, personaly I would just get a phone book, or yellow pages...and search for schools. Go on google and search a few up. Visit a few that you think you might like, and see if they are worth it.

    No, it is not.

Waiting for Omega to greet him is kind of like waiting for Barry Bonds to shuffle up to a ball placed on a tee. We know where this is going....

This can't be emphasized enough. Investigate, investigate, investigate. Watch multiple classes. Ask the sifu/sensei/kru/etc. questions - do you have to pay for belt tests? Is the emphasis on combat, fitness, or philosophy?

If your interested in standup, try World Oyama Karate in Homewood. It is a kyokushin offshoot. They still put on regular competitions with the same rules. It is on the southern border of Birmingham. They also have schools in Chelsea and Trussville. For stand-up there isn't really much else in Birmingham. Its in the book.

There is a BJJ instructor--"Samuel Picculo" or something like that, in the area. He is a brown belt. He is pretty good, but some don't like his teaching style. Take a few lessons if you're interested and make your own assessment. There is also a purple belt in Vincent, James Srygley. He is the police chief down there and runs a club. He is probably a brown belt level but there isn't anyone around to promote him. He is super nice and a great instructor and the guys are very friendly, but it is a pretty good drive. I think Samuel is in the book. James isn't but his website is Southernbjj.com.

I would be pretty cynical about anything else in the B'ham area. I did MA in the area for about 15 years there, but it has been about 4 years since I've been in town so things could have changed. Hope this helps.

Also, expect some serious hazing on the forum---it goes with being a noobie.

"Soh Bakh Doh" - sounds like something from the sound of music.
