    Your hips should come off the ground enough to lessen friction NORMALLY. What you're describing is normal shrimping.

    If I'm going to shrimp out onto my left hip, then the only things on the floor should be my right foot, my left shoulder and my left elbow. Sliding won't work unless you're on tatame which are quite slippery.

    Actually, I find tatami suck hardcore when you're not wearing a gi.

    They're right, Piz. That's a normal shrimp. Whatever you were taught was likely just incomplete. You'd never get out from under someone heavier by just sliding.
