    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Apparently, The Gracies have always been that way ...

    http://bjj.org/editorials/judo1960.html

I don't recall this link getting posted before, but it shows an interesting parallel to the modern hostilities between Judo and BJJ.

Also, isn't a little weird that the Gracies would be this vehmenently anti-Japanaese (according tp the author of the letter) when the art was intially developed with a Japanese instructor?

They must've learnt their Head-Stuck-In-My-Arse-Jitsu from the Japs... along with Judo. :D

Why did the Gracies start calling it 'Jiu Jitsu'?

Their whole appraisal of Judo or Jiu Jitsu is "Can you beat your opponent by any means?".
    I find that sexy.

    modern hostilities?
brazilian are good at three things:
    1) carnivAl
    2) body-boarding
    3) jj

after that comes volleyball, women's surfing, and bikinis (okay, brazilian bikinis are #1). judo is waaay down the list . . . bjj doesn't have throws, so they throw themselves, and diss judo. that's not hostile, just self-serving.

The story I always hear is that Maeda taught striking and more ground fighting, and that because of his pride fighting activities, tried to distance it from judo by calling it jiu-jitsu so Kodokan wouldn't get mad at him.

I don't know if any of that is true, but that's how I heard it. Someone more knowledgable would do well to pop in and set the record straight.
