<img src="http://www.bullshido.net/images/mailbag.jpg" align=left>I don't normally respond to emails spawned by threads here (partly because I don't get very many of them).
But I figured I'd share this one with everyone. Names have been changed to protect anonymity, though the author is encouraged to respond.

Subject: Chi delusions
This is pretty much in response to the latest news article that you posted about delusions which was directed at the chi delusion crowd.
I like to go and do chi kung exercises, and when I do it, I feel very distinctly something warm moving about in my body. It's not the same thing that you feel when you exercise.
However, as far as I can tell, this dosen't seem to affect anything around me at all. I have no idea how I might go about trying to use the warm stuff to fight someone. And I certainly have no way of proving anything about it because as far as I can tell it dosen't do anything except flow around inside of me when I do chi kung.
But, I'm pretty sure that I'm not deluded, because I don't really have much of a personal investment in having chi powers. People on the internet like KiWarrior obviously have a big part of their self esteem and sense of self-worth invested in having super chi powers. But in my case, this warm stuff makes almost no difference in my life. I know that I don't have super chi powers and I don't care that I don't because I never expected to. I have no reason to be believing in this warm stuff I feel. I don't try to sell people lessons on how to develop super chi powers.
So, there's no particular reason why if I feel this warm stuff very distinctly, it isn't actually there. I have no reason to fabricate, in other words.
So, my bottom line is, I think that chi does exist, but that as far as I can tell it dosen't do anything like a lot of people claim that it does. I'm pretty sure, in addition, for the reasons I described above, that I'm not delusional either.
I don't normally engage in email exchanges about topics posted, but as I've personally experienced similar things during my CMA training, I'd like to respond with a more likely explanation and a question.
Do you feel that this is something Supernatural, as many proponents of Chi suggest it is, or do you feel it would more likely be the fact that you're paying more attention to your body, movements, breath, etc, and are actually just more aware of a natural process than you would be if you were going about your daily life?
The mind is a powerful thing, and if you have a strong enough desire to feel something paranomral during your martial arts practice, your mind will produce it for you. That's delusion.
Do you understand the principle of Occam's Razor?
Essentially it means that the simplest explanation is usually the most likely.
And in this case, it's much more likely that you're just experiencing a natural, mundane effect of your efforts, filtered through an unobjective desire to experience something special.

during deep meditation i get the warm stuff to....i also get very intense electrical vibrations through my body......actually the most likely explanation is that something is going on with the hypothalimus, because that regulates body heat i believe. but who knows.
(i am not the author of the email by the way)
i would also like to add that there is a very clear sensation that the warm feeling, mixed with the electric vibration is comming from the head region. I feel a pop in my head and then like warm vibrating honey i get the feeling flowing from the pop throughout my body. When i say vibration i mean it is literally like sitting on a gas powered motor. there is also a high pitched ringing in my ears during this time and my skin becomes flush and i start to sweat, i assume from the heat generated.

The first letter reminds me of what my wife said. She has chronic cold hands and feet and sometimes when doing tai chi she her hands warm up suddenly. The instructor said that was doing tai chi correctly and getting the effects of the chi working. She has yet to blast me with it, but if it can be directed toward me a little when it matters :D I would appreciate it."Preparing mentally, the most important thing is, if you aren't doing it for the love of it, then don't do it." - Benny Urquidez

I am not so sure that these sensations are psychosomatic. If chi is energy and/or breath, and you perform an exercise designed to "let it flow" the sensations may be "chi". There is an equal possibility it might be contrived.
The problem with chi, is that there are individuals who believe it is some sort of supernatural power force. The letter writer is not out there in left field. I get distinct sensations of heat, and "tingling" when doing certain movements. I do ot experience the same sort of thing while running or digging a hole for example.

Sometimes when I meditate I get a warm sensation in my forehead that spreads all over my body. Then there are the times when I bite into a York Peppermint Patty.....

I get the same strong sensations of warmth, tingling and vibration. It is as real a sensation as any. But also, I can direct the sensations around my body with my mind and thinking. Instantly I can send it anywhere in my body, by thinking. The sensations also beome very energizing, making you feel very vitalised eventually. The more practice the stronger and more intense the feeling of energy. I don't beleive in hypnotism too much at all.
