    I think for most people, the classic scarf hold is not a good position unless you have a size advantage. There really isn't a WHOLE lot you can do, and transitioning out of it can be a little risky with getting your back taken. Whereas with a side control or north/south or modified kesa, when you are feeling them get out of it you can transition to another holddown without any risk, with classic kesa gatame you are always running the risk of getting your back taken. In judo competition this isn't that big of a deal as you can probably turtle up and get stood back up. But in BJJ you're gonna get tapped unless you're very comfortable from all fours. Personally, I LIKE it when people try this hold on me (with the exception of one guy at my judo club who would make you want to die when he sunk it on you), because if you see it coming ahead of time its very easy to take the back in the transition.

    Modified (kuzure) kesa gatame is another thing entirely. You should always be using that when you're in side control (and also reverse kesa, of course). There is no danger of getting the back taken (unless they get the underhook, which gets you into kesa but without the strong hold, so they'll take your back in that transition).

    Nobody has mentioned the option of sinking yourself on the opponent's ribcage and inhibiting their breathing. I've actually tapped people with that.

    CrimsonTiger: I've known people that could do that really fucking well. It sucked. But still, not that many can do it, and even more don't have the weight required to do it. You don't have to be a super heavyweight to do it, but still a lightweight like me simply cannot.

    I personally am very annoyed by people grappling with bad breath. I've only rolled with one person in all my days who ever smelled so bad that it disturbed me. His breath also smelled like his body odor (mostly like rotting). If someone smells like sweatiness I don't really care because everyone is very sweaty and it becomes hard to distinguish after a while. Bad breath, on the other hand, is simply terrible.

    A great way to really add weight to the kesa when you are just putting weight into them, is to grab your thigh with the arm that goes around their neck (as opposed to clasping your hands together).

    Nope not true! ;)

    You're doing it wrong, I've tapped people that weigh much more than me. The trick is to keep your butt 1/4" off the ground and sink your weight way out.
