The origins of american collegiate wrestling...

well, it occured to me one day that, while i know my judo history in and out, i have no idea when, where and by whom american collegiate wrestling was created in it's original incarnation.

So, anybody, please inform me as to the origin of american folkstyle (collegiate)

Freestyle is NOT collegiate wrestling. They wrestle the same in college as they do in high school, folkstyle, with the addition of riding time.

EDIT: Freestyle and Greco are held in the offseason and are available to any age group. I started freestyle in junior high and my brother started in elementary school.

Regardless, that doesn't change the fact that kickboxing is commonly known as fighting while grappling simply isn't. - Osiris

wrestling has been around at least since the ancient greeks. The spartans practiced wrestling as part of their curriculum. The early olympics had wrestling, but not the first olympics. competitors competed naked at these early olympics. The earliest mention that i know of regarding wrestling is when Gilgamesh the King fought Enkidu the Wildman. Enkidu's defeat lead to a friendship between the two.
