Freddy: How has escrima been proven in combat?

If I may answer in part for Freddy, it was used to no small effect in World War II against the invading Japanese, which is a step above "knowing some guy who totally whacked a mugger in the head with a pipe", I should think.

Not to mention that great MMA event known as the Philipines vs. Spain. I know that Pre-UFC events are meaningless because Royce invented martial arts, but a bit before your time some crazy philipinos with knives and sticks kicked a lot of conquistador ass.

It is a excellent arts to learn if you want to learn how to use many different weapons at once.
"I would rather to admit I am a lousy student instead of saying I am the best student because once you thinks you are the best, you see no reason to continue learning"
I would pick bag work over masturbating, fighting over sex, and KOing someone over having a orgasm!

also until not too long ago death matches have had a long tradition in escrima. the masters of the different styles (and there are many) challenged each other. the matches were fought until one of the opponents died or gave up. if someone created a new style he was sure to be challenged and tested.

I agree , I find my escrima training helps with my empty hand techniques as well. Dan Inosanto taught Bruce Lee kali/escrima/arnis and bruce used it as the basis for the JKD trapping hands stuff and footwork. Plus the techniques can even be used baseball bat to baseball bat which bring the street into it.
Of course this hurts, after all it is not basket weaving.
After reading Jekyll's threads I bring back an old sig.......
Do you really train or just bore people on message boards and parties talking about it.

Ben Largusa's teacher Floro Villabri fought death matches. Something like 60 of them. One of my favorite stories about him is how he supposedly learned stickfighting from a blind princess on an island somewhere and was given a magic amulet to protect him when he finished his training with her. When he dueled he would always cerimoniously remove the amulet because if he wore it, that wouldn't be fair because it made him invinvible.
Magic or no, he died undefeated in MANY armed duels.

I love the fact the Kali and other FMA's came into being because the Spanish were sick of getting their asses kicked by little guys with swords.
"Okay. No swords allowed."
So they started to get their asses kicked by little guys with knives.
"Right. No knives. No metal."
So they started to get their asses kicked by guys with hardwood sticks.
I think it was when the little guys with freaking BAMBOO started to take them out that they left entirely.
