In a great deal of books and articles they claim that there are sacred ritual done outside the ring (not the rammuay or wai khru), tattoos, and incantations performed to protect a fighter during his match. I'm sure that such a practice has to have survived somewhere, and I was wondering if anyone had in-depth info on these possibly forgotten parts of the art. I think that these rituals and actions are excellent study for all sorts of anthropological and theology type thesis studies. Anyone have any sites or decent books they could point me to?

They are not actually part of Muay Thai per say they are part of the old religion of South East Asia. I dont know any sites or books but I do have a friend that practices these arts. The reasson why the wai khru etc. is practiced in the ring is to seek spiritual favour and also to prrotect the fight ring from outside supernatural interferences. My friend has some pretty bad ass tattoes. He was in shock with pain for four days after he had them done (all part of the initiation). He said it was painful like hell.
This topic is a very complex study.

how so? I have nothing but respect for the old ways, I'd just like to learn more about them. They're there, aren't they? I'm not making fun of them, or in any way berating them, in fact I'm very attracted to their origins and meanings.
