    Chokes VS Strangles

    IS there a difference?

I was told that a choke cuts of the air supply ( windpipe is the target) and that a strangle cuts off the blood supply ( carotid arteries are the target).

    Correct?
I believe strangles are faster then chokes and less dangerous, but conditions like drugs may make strangle ineffective. True?

Your definition of strangle is cutting blood supply to the brain. No amount of drugs will let the nervous system keep functioning when the brain has no oxygen.

Chokes (again by your definition) hurt like Hell but with a good lung capacity you can keep fighting for almost a minute. Most people won't though since in my experience they're terribly uncomfortable and induce panic, rather than how a strangle deadening your body as soon as it sinks in.

Chokes CRUSH the windpipe, I am not sure how you would keep fighting with a crushed windpipe.
As for the drug thing, I HTH instructor for the ETF ( thats the Canadian version of SWAT) and the Peel Region Police, told me that guys on PCP and COKE need to be put down by cutting the O2 and that cutting off the blood supply doesn't work, or maybe its the other way around?

From what I have been told I think you are correct, as for the danger both can be harmful. I would think that the strangle could cause blood to spurt which could lead to air bubbles in the blood flow causeing stroke/ heart attack. I used the word could be cause it may or may not happen. If any drug that causes the heart rate to increase that would increase the chance of it happening. I would included the energy drinks that have caffine , ephdra and such in them.

I guess people I've sparred with didn't fully crush my trachea then (thank God).

I really can't answer the PCP/Coke thing but I'm guessing you have to cut off the blood to the brain instead of the oxygen to the lungs.

Don't know if there is a difference, but chokes attacking the windpipe? The rear naked choke is a choke - or so the name would imply - and it attacks the carotid arteries and not the windpipe.

ronnin, cutting off the blood supply with a stangle is the perferred method for some one on drugs, a choke will work to ,however the damage it MAY cause to the windpipe can make it a deadly force technique.
