I forget his name now "Jae something something"???? My memory fades me. He is quite a prominant hapkido practitioner. I beleive he is a ninth degree and one of the leading authorities in hapkido now.

I heard that Bruce knew Wally Jay and learned a few things from him."Preparing mentally, the most important thing is, if you aren't doing it for the love of it, then don't do it." - Benny Urquidez

Re: Bruce Lee - Where did he get his grappling?Originally posted by judoka-san
Hi all, sorry if this is re-post material. I just recently met and talked at length with an ex-Army Ranger (Us Army). He was in service during the time when special forces were moving away from judo ground tech's and onto Gracie/BJJ techniques (late 80's early 90's?). In fact, he said Rorian and Royce were training them pretty regularly in the beginning. Interestingly enough, he said they pretty much train Muay Thai stand up now, but used to train ninjutsu standup fighting.
Anyway, he mentioned that Bruce Lee had learned some (if not all) of his grappling from the Gracie's, and I thought he implied directly from them (ie, Helio Gracie). Is this Bullshido material? Can anyone substantiate this?
Thanks in advance for the replies.
PS- I am not a Gracie or Bruce Lee nut hugger.
It was the mid to late 90's when Regiment went to bjj. When I got to 3rd Batt in 98 we were doing a little of bjj. Supposedly Royce had a friend somewhere in 3rd Batt or Regimental hq."We spoke to them in the only language they understood: the machine gun"

Bruce trained with Prof. Wally Jay in the early 1960's because he saw the value of Prof. Jay's broad back ground in the fighting arts. This fact is in Prof. Jay's biogaphy at the beging of hs book Small Circle Jujitsu

From memory I think Lee did a bit with Gene Lebell. Or at least got his arse carried around by him.
Bruce Lee got beat up by Wong Jack Man. A totally unknown guy off the street named Jack Man put Bruce in the hospital.
Bruce Lee also got a back injury fighitng a muay thai person.

Actually Bruce did fight with Gene but I dont know if it was a serious fight per say. That where Bruce learnt his wrestling from.
As for the Muay Thai person. Was this the fight he had during filming The Big Boss in Thailand?Ghost of Charles Dickens
