Just curious for opinions. Is the consensus that Yip Man couldn't fight worth a damn/was a fraud? That top student of his, William Chung seems pretty lame, noticed he has a lot of How-To books out that look pretty gimmicky.

My opinion: I don't think Yip Man was a fraud at all. He trained some incredible martial artists. I can't vouch for his fighting ability. Though I don't know why you think William Cheung was his top student? Certainly William Cheung thinks so.

The consensus is that if you don't train in an alive manner against resisting opponents it dosen't matter what your style is. Go read any of the many threads on aliveness and non compliant sparring. Better yet stop posting until you go to a school that trains that way and try it. Kind of like the Bruce Lee thing where you are looking at the finger (bullshido) and missing the glorious sight of the moon (alive training). Especially because in this version the finger keeps poking you in the eye while yelling "Look at the freakin moon, numbnutz!".

I wasn't asking about the style, I was asking if there was any objective information about whether Yip Man could really fight or not, since every Wing Chunner, no matter what their lineage/organization whatever, credits him as some sort of founder.

Wrong again. Yip Man brought WC to Hong Kong and taught a lot of people. A lot of those people then left Hong Kong to begin schools all over the world. Wing Chun is a lot older than Yip Man. They are several lineages that have no connection with Yip Man. As to whether he could fight, damned if I know.

Yeah, good to know you don't care to such an extent, that you've revived this already stupid thread with a zero information value and rubbish grammar post, n00b!

Welcome to Bullshido, by the way.

I hope you'll become a way better poster by reading around quite a lot before you post again.
    Good luck.
