I agree with Asia on this one...for all the bashing of KF I heard, I know a couple of solid KF practitioners that are willing to mix it up and test themselves. One of the best fighters I've ever known (personally) is a dominantly-MT fighter (semi-pro I think) who comes through our dojo every so often. One of his buddies is a long-time KF practitioner (not sure of the exact style...I should pay more attention) but apparently these two often fight to a draw. I haven't had a chance to witness them yet, but I'm pushing for it. :P

The biggest key seems to be conditioning in most styles. Technique only gets you so far, it's more about how much punishment you can take in the process of delivering your own brand of hurt.

Oh CrimsonTiger, new guys are so cute. You're not supposed to say anything reasonable; you're supposed say something like, "My 7 year old sister does KF and I can kick her ass, so therefore KF sucks."

Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

Yeah, anecdotes can be a poor way to prove a point. It is a little alarming, though, that some styles do so poorly in NHB. I would love to see a 'pure' Chinese/Japanese/Korean stylist do well in a KOTC or Gladiator Challenge, much less Pride or UFC. Haven't seen it yet, but I can still hope.

However, I have seen a lot more spinning heel kicks and backfists lately in pro NHB, so maybe TMA (or at least some of the moves) are making a come-back.
"I had once talked to Billy Conn, the boxer, about professionals versus amateurs - specifically street fighters. One had always heard rumors of champions being taken out by back-alley fighters. Conn was scornful. "Aw, it's like hitting a girl," he said. "They're nothing."

I think the problem is the way that they are taught. When I saw Bas Rutten's spinning backfist against Frank Shamrock, I was thrilled. For too many years we'd seen fighters using these as first attacks. When Rutten did it, it made sense, and it was right in line with how my TMA recommended using it.

    >Asia - you taught Kyokushin????

Yes. I was a Nidan at the time (sandan now but haven't test for a grade for a while and really don't have a real urge to) I taught under two other instructors. This was volunteer work I didn't get paid for it.

OMG! you could probably kick your BAJI intructor's ass no problem (no offence.)

    You're supposed to be a traditionalist - but you're a master Sports Fighter! :D :D :D :D :D :D

(btw Kyokushin is SF, because it; main emphasis is on sparring from what I;ve seen, the style's best fighters compete in K1.) :)

Very impressive: you must;ve done alot of sparring? Knees, elbow and all? :D

Carefull. This is dangerously close to the "Well he wasn't REALLY a traditional gong-fu guy." we sometimes hears from BJJ fanboys after they've been beat.

Who started this bonehead line of thinking anyways that somehow traning in more than one style and competing and sparring is NON-traditional?

Omar is right, because if Vanderlei Silva went and joined a TKD school, it would be okay to say that you got beat by a TKD guy, because he would not use any of his muay thai skills after taking up TKD.

sounds like Omar has been beat up by too many BJJ fanboys, and has some issues to work out.
